Pete Wells & Guy Fieri

Pete Wells, restaurant reviewer of The New York Times, just penned an epic take-down of Guy Fieri’s new Times Square Restaurant “Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar”, and it’s glorious.

By all accounts the restaurant is a piece of crap, an additional culinary embarrassment located in the Times Square nexus of shitty eating, smack dab in the middle of the greatest dining city in the world. People come from all over the planet to visit New York, and end up eating at Bubba Gump Shrimp and Olive Garden. Now the hordes will drink neon green cocktails and virtually inhale burgers with “Donkey Sauce”, brought to the world by a caricature of a chef who happens to be on TV.

I don’t love this review just because it’s amazingly, poetically harsh, but because it is deserved, or appears to be. It is a warning – a service to readers, and a message to celebrity chefs doling out garbage to a loyal fan base.

On this blog, I dislike saying negative things, though I often do it. I figure it’s the dutiful thing to do for any reader who may assign any credibility to the things I say, but I also think there’s a respectful way to do it. Yes, I could simply choose to not post anything at all when I have a poor experience, but what good does that do anyone, including the cooks and restauranteurs? It may sound egostical to assume my feedback matters to them, but I have had positive experiences providing criticism to restaurants – calm, objective conversations which have resulted in understanding, and sometimes change, on both sides of the table.

I do write about my experiences because I’m a fan, and love when a new-t0-me restaurant, dish, or ingredient is amazing. And I wish they all were.

At the same time, damn, Pete’s review makes me grin. Wipe yourself off Guy, you have donkey sauce on your face.

Take a good look at your own self in the mirror today. Pete Wells is a prick & so are you. But that’s just my opinion.

Jimmy, I think you should give Guy a chance. The next time you go to NYC, you should try his place out and post a review here. And maybe Guy would actually be there and you could get a picture with him and discuss wine and the Omakase menu at his favorite sushi restaurant. Which probably contains pulled pork or something (both the wine and the sushi).
