Last week I once again traveled for work, but this time I was doing my annual visit to our North Carolina branches. Not only did I get to enjoy memorable food in Chapel Hill (Lantern), heady pizza in Greensboro (Sticks ‘n Stones), and numerous chopped pork sandwiches, I was also able to swing by my parents’ house Tuesday evening and have a belated Father’s Day dinner with my dad.

He’s the guy showing off this tomato plants above. They’re already very tall, huh? He’s somewhat fanatic about them. The plastic poles he was using to grow the plants were bending and falling over from the excessive weight, so a couple of years ago some guys at work took 4/8″ reinforcing steel rods (rebar), welded cross sections every few feet, and spray painted them green. Those suckers aren’t going anywhere.

We had a nice dinner of bruschetta (utilizing first tomatoes from the garden), arugula salad, red snapper, asparagus, and corn. A real taste of summer.

I brought a (allegedly) nice bottle of ’02 Roumier Corton-Charlemagne to celebrate. Dad brought the Chassagne-Montrachet. Turns out his was the winner (and saving grace) as the Grand Cru Corton was oxidized. I knew premature oxidation was a potential risk with white Burgundy, but damn I was still disappointed. This was my first three figure wine failure, and at my budget, it’s a loss that carries quite a sting. To put it eloquently, it’s a major bummer. I’m not shying away though, because I still crave them and think they’re some of the most exciting wines to drink, white wine or otherwise. Part of the Burg allure is their hit-and-miss nature…

We’ll see if I still feel the same way if my next few splurge bottles end up being bunk. :)

That was a fun dinner. I hate it that your wine was bad. Shit happens.

Ahhh sucks to drop 100+ on a bottle of wine and it was no good. I’d be super bummed.

Sorry about your wine. That would be not fun at all.Which brings me to make a request. Could you please post a small list of your favorites wines under the 50.00 mark? Being a novice and of limited means, I don’t want to make a mistake, nor break the bank. I enjoy your articles and would trust your advice.

    Thomas –

There are tons of options under $50. I rarely drink anything over $50, just on special occasions and with groups of friends. Sharing a bunch of bottles (where you bring 1-2) is the best way to try a bunch of pricey stuff.

I don’t shop in ATL too often (I buy a lot online), but Ansley and Tower are two good places I like.

Beaujolais is a less expensive way to try some Burgundy esque wines. Look for Grand Cru with names like Fleurie, Morgin, Brouilly, Cote de Brouilly.

I think I saw the Királyudvar Tokaji Sec at Tower – this is a very cool bottle at $25.

Tower also has some “grower” champagne (actually produced by the grape grower, not a very large champagne house) for about $50. Amazing champagnes. My last buy there was the Vincent Carre Champagne 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs. $49.

The wines of Jean François Mérieau are very good and all under $25. The vouvray and the gamay are particularly good. The gamay “Les Bois Jacou” can be found for $12-13.

Which brings me to another thought – finding an importer you like is a good way to discover new wines with less risk. The Merieau wines are all imported by Jon David Headrick. I find that I like the style of wines that he imports. So when I see his name on an unfamiliar bottle, I am more likely to give it a go. The same goes for Kermit Lynch. If you find a bottle you really like, look up the importer and see what they are all about, and what other wines they import.

For US wines – lots of good Oregon pinot options for $50 at that price point.

I like the Tandem wines from Sonoma (Chard, Pinot especially). Orin Swift “the prisoner”. Hendry wines from Napa are a good value for that area.

Hope this helps some. Good luck!

I’ve named a bunch of French/European wines – if you like

    Jimmy-

Thank you for prompt post. Tower on Piedmont seems to have a large selction. Before for me, it’s been a wild guess method. The help is much appreciated.
