A friend of mine sent me a link to the site MetroMix a few weeks ago. The site covers restaurants, events, music, etc in a variety of cities, including Atlanta. It’s relatively new, pretty decent, and I’ve subscribed to their RSS feeds so I can keep my finger on the pulse of all that is awesome in Atlanta. As the site generates more content and rating it should improve.

This morning I saw they had a posting where they list 10 Thai restaurants to try in Atlanta and I wanted to see how I measure up. I fancy myself a bit of a Thai aficionado; I eat it my food Thai hot, I’ve mastered the perfect pronunciation of Tom Yum Gai, and I don’t even giggle when I order the Pad Prik King (not anymore, at least).

In keeping with the theme of yesterday’s post, let’s take a look at their list and see how I do:

  • Spydee (Midtown) – Never been there. Looks to be that place that has been many Asian places (was a Vietnamese place for a long time, I think) over by what was Jock’s & Jill’s on 10th street
  • Spoon (Midtown) – I went one time – it’s real close to Georgia Tech. Small location, somewhat trendy. I remember my food was plenty spicy, but not the best QPR (quality/price ratio for you non-winos).
  • Tamarind Thai Cuisine (MIdtown) – I haven’t been since they opened in their new location, but this one is best in Atlanta to me. Owned by the same people that own Nan’s, it has the same great quality, for a more reasonable price. I’ve had some amazing fish dishes here, including a halibut, that was fantastic.
  • Annie’s Thai Castle (Buckhead) – I know I’ve been here, but I can’t really remember much about it. Sorry.
  • East Atlanta Thai & Sushi (East Atlanta) – Never been here. I don’t like places that mix sushi and thai food. You can’t be great at both.
  • Surin of Thailand (Va-Hi) – Great place. I love their Panang Curry sauce, which is my good ol’ standby at most Thai restaurants. Reasonably priced, can get very crowded.
  • Thaicoon Marietta (Marietta) – Never been here. I’m pretty sure that this is just on the list so Metromix ensured they covered a large geographic area, thereby pleasing as many readers as possible. Actually, I’m very sure that’s why this list is as such.
  • Amaryn’s Thai Bowl & Sushi (Decatur) – Free “War is Not the Answer” yard sign with each order of Nam Sod
  • Curry Curry (Smyrna) – Never even been to Smyrna
  • Harry and Son’s (Va-Hi) – Same owner as Surin. 100 yards away (if that). Very similar menu items, but I believe Harry and Son’s has sushi. Just as crowded as Tamarind. They actually opened a 3rd thai restaurant within another 100 yards, but that one didn’t survive and is now Pozole (forgettable food, good margaritas). MMX really should have listed Tamarind and Harry & Son’s as one entry on this list.
Mistakes - These should have been on the list
  • Bangkok Thai – First Thai restaurant in Atlanta. Great service, VERY fair prices, and outstanding, real Thai Food.
  • Nan Fine Dining – As I mentioned, a bit on the expensive side, but you aren’t going to see the range of ingredients, presentation, service, or ambience at any other Thai restaurant in Atlanta. Special occasion worthy.
Notables - Not necessarily in the top 10, but these places are worth checking out.
  • Phuket Thai – Great name, authentic food
  • Malaya – 1st focus is on Malaysian food (which rules), but they also make some good Thai food, and the owner remembers EVERYONE and is super friendly. I think they lost their liquor license recently so FYI if that matters to ya. Not gonna lie, not being able to have a Singha with my food is a serious turn-off.
  • Rama 5 – Go for lunch. I had a duck lunch special for under $10 that was great.
  • Tin Drum – Close to Georgia Tech, fast, good Thai noodle bowls.
  • Erawan – GREAT green and yellow curry, spicy as hell, authentic.
  • Thai Diner – Trendy and commercial, but still has a great Pad Thai

You need to give Spoon another shot. I’ve been thrice and every time, it gets better. Their specialty items beat the run of the mill Thai.

In my opinion, the Spicy Spaghetti at Surin/ Harry & Sons is the best Thai dish in the A. It just has the right taste. That, and the wait staff at Surin is awesome. Remember that one time, when the guy told us to buckle our seatbelts…

One vote for Penang over in little asia (my neck of the woods).

Mailai over in Virginia Highlands?? They have great a great chicken/curry/nuts/avocado dish…..is that Thai?? I’m not quite the aficionado on the cuisine. It makes my nose run, and I usually leave crying.

Indeed my friend, that sounds like Thai food. Massaman Curry to be specific. One of my favorites.

I couldn’t find Panda Express on this list?
